Louis A. Casciato, Sr., Born on March 15, 1938, he was a proud Golden Hawk, graduating in 1959 from St. Joseph’s University with a BS in Biology.  He received his MS in Secondary School Sciences from Villanova in 1962.  Louis spent most of his professional career at West Chester University as Associate Professor in the Earth and Space Science Department, and enjoyed supporting and guiding countless students for over a decade as Director of the University’s Academic Advising Center.  Louis earned numerous distinctions over the course of his career, including the prestigious Gustav Ohaus award of the National Science Teachers’ Association.  He retired from West Chester University after 45 years of service.

Louis and Marie, his bride of fifty-nine years, began their life together in Philadelphia, then Yeadon, where they raised their four children, Karen (Monaghan), Louie, Mary Ann (Koskinen) and Kathleen (Leppert).   The people of his parish (St. Louis) knew him as a CYO coach, reliable mentor, and dear friend.  In 1989, the Casciatos moved to East Goshen, just around the corner from Lou’s office at the University.   After his retirement from West Chester in 2009 he poured his heart into his family, loving the hours spent with his children and grandchildren, his days at the beach, faithfully riding the endless roller coaster of the Phils and the Eagles (like the rest of us), and nurturing his passion for college basketball.

In the fall of 2014, Louis was diagnosed with cancer.   After defying the odds for over two years with his patient, determined and beautiful spirit, he died on April 27th at the age of 79 surrounded by the love of his family.

In addition to Marie and his daughters, Louis is survived by his three sons-in-law, Mike, James and Jeffrey, and 8 loving grandchildren, Kate, Dan, Sarah, Rachel, Brian, Rebecca, Matt, and Emma.  Louis was preceded in death by his son, Louis, Jr. on March 26, 2015.

The family invites you to join us at St. Maximillian Kolbe Church (15 East Pleasant Grove Road, West Chester, PA) for Lou’s Vigil on Monday May 1st from 6-8pm.   We also invite you to celebrate his life and spirit at his funeral liturgy, also at St. Max’s, on Tuesday, May 2nd at 10:30am with a visiting hour from 9:00-10:15.  Interment will be held at Holy Cross Cemetery in Yeadon, PA immediately following the funeral liturgy.  In honor of his dedication to young people and their futures, donations can be made to St. Peter and Paul Education Fund, c/o St Peter and Paul Parish (1325 Boot Road, West Chester, Pa.   19380).
