Helen (Petak) (Crawford) Heller passed peacefully to eternal life at her daughter’s home outside of Reading, PA in the early hours of June 3, 2016. She was 92 years old.
Born in Berwick, PA on September 26, 1923 to Anna (Belekanich) and Michael Petak, Helen was the youngest of seven children and preceded in death by her three brothers and three sisters.
Helen was a 1941 graduate of Berwick High School and was married to John Crawford prior to his death in 1953. During WWII while her husband served in Europe, Helen worked at American Car and Foundry in Berwick, PA where tanks and military vehicles were manufactured for the troops overseas. She married the late George Heller, Jr. in 1955 and raised three children from their longtime residence in Montoursville, PA. During that time, Helen also worked for many years in the Registrar’s Office of Lycoming College in Williamsport, PA, as an administrative assistant helping students with their course scheduling and managing the academic calendar for Lycoming. Helen and George retired in 1980 and moved to Swansboro, NC where they resided for 20 years prior to returning to West Chester, PA where they lived until recently in Hershey’s Mill. While at Hershey’s Mill, she enjoyed volunteering at the TV station on site and hosting friends and family in their home. Helen was a loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother who enjoyed serving her family, staying active, traveling, and in her younger years, gardening and swimming. She was active in several Lutheran Churches during her life and lived for her family.
Helen is survived by her children: Bradley (Nancy) Crawford of Macon, GA, Douglas (Ellen) Heller of Houston, TX, and Jayne Leh of Reading, PA. Helen is also survived by eleven grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
Relatives and friends are invited to her viewing Saturday, June 11th from 9:00 – 10:00 A.M. followed by a  10 A.M. funeral service at St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1239 Clover Mill Rd., Chester Springs, PA 19425. Interment will be at Berwick Cemetery, Berwick, PA later in the day and will be private for the immediate family.
