William Phillips Obituary

William H. Phillips, affectionately known as Bill or Whitey to his friends and family, passed away peacefully on July 8, 2025, in Marlton, NJ, at the age of 89. Born on January 17, 1936, in Philadelphia, PA, Bill's life was a testament to his unwavering devotion to his family, his passion for life, and his enduring love for his late wife, Elinore.

Bill's story began on the streets of Philadelphia, where, at the tender age of 15, he met the love of his life, Elinore, then just 14, as she glided on roller skates. That serendipitous encounter set the stage for a lifelong partnership. Together, they navigated the journey of life, a voyage that Bill famously reflected upon at Elinore's funeral, saying, "We did everything together except this." Their love was a beacon that shone brightly, guiding their family through the years.

A loving father, Bill is survived by his children: William H. Phillips, Jr., Nadine (Chuck) Staats, Mark (Barbara) Phillips, Suzanne (the late Mario) DelConte, and Diane D'Ambrosio. He was a doting grandfather to 8 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren, who will miss his presence deeply. His 9th great-grandchild will be born in September.  His legacy is also marked by the loving memories of his grandson, Daniel Staats, and granddaughter, Bridget Phillips, who predeceased him.

Bill's professional life was marked by his dedication to providing for his family. As a computer salesman, he was known for his work ethic and integrity. His commitment to his family's well-being was unparalleled; he worked two jobs and attended night school to ensure his loved ones never went without.

Christmas was a time of joy for Bill, who reveled in the delight of his children, ensuring a mountain of presents awaited them each year. He was the master of ceremonies when it came to decorating the family Christmas tree, meticulously overseeing the placement of every single strand of tinsel.

His love for life extended beyond his home. An avid fisherman, Bill imparted the art of saltwater fishing to his children and later, his grandchildren, creating a tapestry of cherished memories. Vacations at Stone Harbor were a family tradition, highlighted by a night at Wildwood Boardwalk and indulgent breakfasts at Uncle Bill's Pancake House.

Bill's passion for sports was evident to all who knew him. He coached his sons' baseball teams in their youth and was a formidable presence in the Sandlot League. His love for the game was so profound that he once turned down an invitation to The Philadelphia Athletics' training camp, choosing instead to be present for the birth of his first child.

A man of faith, Bill's faith was the cornerstone of his life, guiding him in his love for others and his commitment to his family.

His friends at Sullivan's Cafe knew him well, often finding him deep in discussion over the racing paper or the joy of a day at the horse races.

Bill Phillips lived a life marked by love, passion, and an unwavering commitment to his family. His legacy is one of warmth, generosity, and the countless lives he touched. He will be remembered as a pillar of strength, a beacon of love, and an example of a life well-lived. His story does not end with his passing but continues in the hearts and memories of those who loved him. Rest in peace, Bill, a true gentleman, loving husband, devoted father, and cherished grandfather. Your memory will forever be etched in the lives you've shaped.
