He grew up in Southwest Philadelphia and attended John Bartram High School, where he played on the basketball team and managed the football team.
After graduating, Bill joined the Air National Guard but was soon called to active duty. After serving four years in the Air Force during the Korean War, he returned to Philadelphia and applied to the University of Pennsylvania to fulfill his lifelong dream of becoming a doctor. He made Phi Beta Kappa in his second year and graduated with honors. He went on to Jefferson Medical School where he was elected President of his Senior class. He interned at Fitzgerald Mercy Hospital in Yeadon and opened a private practice in Broomall PA in 1962. He helped hundreds of employees with alcoholism and addiction with a tremendous success rate. Bill retired from PECO in 1991 but continued his work treating addiction and educating others. He was an active member of the American Legion post 93 and carried the American Flag in every parade. He also enjoyed his time serving on the Springfield School Board in the 1970’s.
Bill was a devout Catholic and served at St John Chrysostom Catholic Church in Wallingford as an Acolyte, a Eucharistic Minister, a Sexton, and an Usher. He also participated in the church choir, the faith sharing group and the bereavement group.
He was a big fan of Philadelphia sports teams and was quite competitive himself. He participated in the Senior Olympic Games into his 80s, earning more medals than he could count. He enjoyed traveling and especially spending time with family in Sea Isle City, NJ. He was proud of his Irish heritage and counted his blessings every day.
