V.D. Smith, known to many as Smitty, passed away on April 3, 2026, in West Chester, Pennsylvania, after a short battle with cancer. He was 89 years old.
Born on February 20, 1937, in Gonzales, Louisiana, he carried the values of hard work, loyalty, and quiet strength throughout his life. He was raised with a strong sense of responsibility and went on to attend Sabinal High School in Sabinal, Texas, followed by enlistment in the USAF.
Smitty served his country honorably for 20+ years as a veteran of the United States Air Force, a role he held with pride throughout his life. Following his military service, he worked as a mechanic and an engineer on offshore oil rigs and in the printing industry.
Outside of work, Smitty enjoyed the simple pleasures that made life meaningful to him. He liked spending time at Bingo at the Media VFW, where he found both enjoyment and companionship. He also treasured the company of his cats and took great comfort in their presence. At home, he could often be found watching television or working on word search puzzles, pastimes that brought him relaxation and quiet enjoyment.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Carol Smith, née Ennis. He is survived by his daughter, Deborah Tyler, as well as his two grand-cats, Madeline and Fluffy, who were a cherished part of his daily life.
Smitty will be remembered as a proud veteran, and a hard worker.
