Thomas Ignatius Guerin, Jr., affectionately known as Tom — or “Tommy” to his childhood friends and family — passed away peacefully on June 24, 2025, in Chester Springs at the age of 94. Born on January 24, 1931, in Philadelphia to Thomas I. and Mary C. (Henry) Guerin, Tom was a man of profound faith, boundless love, and a gentle spirit.
Tom’s early life in Philadelphia shaped his enduring character, and his humorous memories of being a "Soda Jerk" on Atlantic City boardwalk near his family's home in Ventnor, NJ, where he delighted in the music and the bustling boardwalk, were among his fondest. After graduating from LaSalle College High School, Tom went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree from Penn State Main, setting the stage for a long career as an aerospace engineer. Over the decades, he lent his remarkable talents to Boeing, General Electric Aerospace, Lockheed Martin, General Dynamics, and other leading engineering firms, working primarily on satellite technology and military defense contracting including his contributions to the revolutionary Boeing V-22 Osprey.
A devoted family man, Tom cherished his beloved wife, Hildegard (Wolf) Guerin, with whom celebrated their sixty-second (62) wedding anniversary in May 2025, and together they raised seven children: Christopher Paul (Anne) Guerin, Eva Maria (Cristophe) Poulain, Gregory Mark (Mary Cristina Plata) Guerin, Jeanne Marie Guerin, the late Thomas Sean Guerin, Daniel Christian (Patricia Hennessy) Guerin, and Maria Teresa Guerin. His love for his family extended to his grandchildren: Emily Anne (Tony), Michelle Christine, Daniel Christopher, Viviane Rosalie, Michael, Mari Cristina, Ana Belén Marie, Monica “Moniquita” Elizabeth, Valeria Rosio, Theresa Maureen, Maria “Molly” Hennessy, and Daniel Patrick, who were the center of his world.
Tom’s Catholic faith was the cornerstone of his life. He lived his beliefs through his actions, whether he was discussing salvation, sharing a laugh with one of his signature jokes, or simply sitting in the sun, immersed in nature’s beauty. A veteran of the Korean War, he often recounted his experiences with humor, referring to his service as “two free North Pacific Cruises.”
His interests were as varied as they were passionate. Gardening, ecology, and geography brought him great joy, and he held a deep appreciation for artifacts, especially those of Native American origin. Tom’s love for travel took him and his family across the vast landscapes of America and Canada by car, always eager to explore and understand the world around him.
Tom’s weekly country drives with his wife were sacred, a testament to their unwavering bond. He was a man who loved to help others, always encouraging his children to take vacations and to embrace life’s adventures. His gentle soul could not bear to harm even a fly, and his reputation as a known germaphobe was met with affectionate smiles from those who knew him best.
A loving brother as well, Tom is survived by his sister, Jeanne Marie Guerin, SHCJ, and predeceased by his brothers, Joseph Guerin and John James Guerin. His legacy of love, faith, and gentleness will continue to live on through his family, friends, and all those fortunate enough to have crossed paths with him.
Family and friends will be received on Monday, June 30th, 2025 from 12 to 12:45pm in St. Elizabeth Church, 110 Saint Elizabeth Drive, Chester Springs, PA 19425. Mass will begin at 1:00pm. Burial will follow in All Souls Cemetery, Coatesville.
Thomas Ignatius Guerin, Jr. was a beacon of hope, a man whose love for his Catholic faith was as profound as his love for his family. His memory will be cherished, and his presence deeply missed by all who were touched by his enduring spirit.
