Richard Johnson, Sr. Obituary

Richard C. Johnson, Sr.,  Loving husband, father, and grandfather passed away peacefully at home at the age of 88 on Thursday January 9, 2020.  Rich of Springfield, Pa, formally of Yeadon and South West Philadelphia was born on March 18, 1931 in Philadelphia, Pa to Bill and Mary (Ryan) Johnson. He attended LaSalle University and was a proud graduate of West Catholic High School. He served in The United States Coast Guard during the Korean War.  On November 8, 1952 he married the love of his life Bettie Jackson. Together they had seven children.   

He was a very successful self-employed business owner of Johnson’s Auto Repair in South West Philadelphia and Clifton Heights.  He was a dedicated member of The Kiwanis Clubs of America and a past President of the St Louis Holy Name Bowling League. Rich was a dedicated Phillies fan who always looked forward to his Spring Training trips to Clearwater with his family.  

Rich had a passion for Sea Isle City, New Jersey where he spent a great deal of time relaxing and enjoying everything Sea Isle had to offer.  He loved his family and was always there for them.  He was known for his sense of humor, his infectious smile, and his kind and compassionate spirit. He loved seeing his Grandchildren, playing cards and talking sports with them.  He was proud of all of their accomplishments.   

Rich was preceded in death by his daughter, Marie and his son, Stephen, his father, Bill, his mother, Mary, his brother Bill and sister Kathleen Zellman and her husband Bud.  He is survived by his wife Elizabeth "Bettie" (nee Jackson) Johnson, his children Richard Jr, Michael (Karen), Joe (Linda),  Kathleen Brennan (Terry), and Bill (Amy).  Rich also has 12 Grandchildren, Kelly Comly (Bill), Michael, Joey (Tiffany), Megan McCaffery (Kevin), Ryan (Gina), Kevin, Marie, Kyle, Billy, Erin, Abbey and Brianna.  He has 8 Great Grandchildren Colette, Connor, Haley, Braeden, Grace, Ryan, Mia and Ashlyn.  He is also survived by his Brother Charlie (Kathy) and Sister in Law Claire Johnson. 


Relatives and friends are invited to attend his Funeral Mass, 11:00 AM, Wednesday, January 15, 2020 at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 136 Saxer Ave., Springfield, PA  19064, where friends may call from 9:30 to 10:45 AM Weds. at the church prior to mass.  Interment SS. Peter & Paul Cemetery
