Ramona Beatriz "Bea" Donato Obituary

On Wednesday, August 23, 2023, Ramona Beatriz "Bea" Donato (nee Aguilera), passed away peacefully in her sleep at the age of 87. A public visitation memorial with family and friends will be held on Saturday, November 11th, 2023 from 10:30 to 11:30 am, with a Funeral Mass at 11:30 am at St. Francis of Assisi Parish Church, 136 Saxer Ave., Springfield, PA  19064. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Jefferson University in her name online, by mail, or over the phone: https://giving.jefferson.edu/ways-to-give/tribute-gifts.html.

Bea is survived by her sister Maria Eugenia "Jean" Mejia, Bea's daughters Susan (James) McCoy, and Francisca (Daniel) Donato, her son Joseph (Julie) Donato, her nephew Nick Martinez, her grandchildren Maya and Eric, as well as a loving extended family. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph E. Donato, of Philadelphia, her firstborn son, Anthony, her mother Maria Antonia Aguilera, and her stepfather Dr. Carlos Mejia.

The family wishes to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff at Rosewood Gardens in Broomall, PA, and the hospice staff at Compassus, Newtown Square. We are forever grateful for their outstanding, earnest dedication and care.

Bea was born and raised in Armenia, Colombia, by her stepfather, a respected doctor, and her mother, a renowned fashion designer. After several visits early in her life, she decided to stay in the United States.

Ballroom dancing was among her many talents, and while working as a dance instructor at a popular studio in Upper Darby, she met her soon-to-be husband, Joe, also an instructor. Together, their performances were requested at local and regional exhibitions and touring dance circuits far and wide.

Bea and Joe married in 1962, and settled into their home in Springfield, PA, in Delaware County in 1964. They quickly became beloved, active members of the community and their parish at St. Francis of Assisi. Bea participated in their musicals, choir, volunteered at their White Elephant thrift shop, and more.

After a fight with cancer, Joe passed away in 1976, and Bea worked tirelessly to raise her three children, eventually getting a teaching degree from West Chester University. Fluent in English as well as her native tongue, Spanish, she taught English as a Second Language extensively, and worked with migrant education programs in schools throughout the region.

She was also an extremely talented seamstress for local and national fashion designers, and continued sewing and tailoring everything from slip covers to everyday clothing to prom and wedding gowns for her family and an entire community of friends and clients throughout the rest of her life.

Herself a lover of art, music, writing, and creative pursuits, she cultivated and encouraged the innate creativity in each of her own children, her nephew, her grandchildren, her students, and everyone around her. She enjoyed bowling and was part of a league at Sproul Lanes in Springfield. And as much as she loved growing vegetables, herbs, and flowers in her backyard garden and in every yard surrounding her house, she also loved traveling with her family on trips to the Jersey shore, points of interest up and down the east coast, across the country to the Grand Canyon, as well as Mexico, Canada, Puerto Rico, and more.

The stories from her life and the love she shared with everyone she met will continue to ripple out into the world forever. We encourage all of you to share her stories with family, friends, and community if you are so moved, today and throughout the rest of your own lives.
