Michael Peterson Obituary

Michael F. Peterson 80, of Exton, PA, formerly of Havertown, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, November 8th, 2025, with his loving wife of 58 years, Gail P. (Rauch) by his side.

Born in Upper Darby, he was the son of the late Francis E. and Helen M. (Stief) Peterson.

Michael attended the St. Denis Grade School in Havertown, he then went to The Malvern Preparatory School for high school, and later graduated from West Chester State College with a Bachelor of Arts and a master’s degree.

For much of his adult life, he was a secondary education teacher and coach, most notably at The Haverford School, where he coached various sports, taught Health and Physical Education, and finally was promoted to the position of Assistant Director of Athletics. After leaving the teaching profession, Michael owned a deli in Drexel Hill, and later finished his working career at Delaware Valley Financial Services in Berwyn.

Michael was an avid Philadelphia sports fan, often listening to 610 WIP throughout the day. In the summer, he could be found watching the Phillies, in the fall it was the Eagles, and the winter was devoted to college hoops, specifically the Big 5. His true passion was basketball, which he coached for over a decade, and through the years developed friendships with many of the area high school and college coaches. Michael also spent countless hours watching his three boys play various sports throughout grade school, high school, and college.

In Michael’s younger years, he could be found in Sea Isle, surfing with friends and his younger brother, Mark. While living in Havertown, he was a member of The Cheese Club. After retirement, he, and his wife Gail, could be found at their house in Lake Naomi of the Pocono Mountains.

Preceded in death by his sister, Anne Crooks (d. 2018). Survived by his brother, Mark Peterson (Susan) of Duxbury, Massachusetts, Sons Luke (Janee), Matthew, and Gregory (Laura), and three granddaughters, Elizabeth, Makayla, and Delaney.
