Maureen Patricia McHugh, 73, of Broomall, Pennsylvania, left us peacefully on November 28. Born June 20, 1951, in Philadelphia.
Maureen was daughter to John F. and Alice M. (Scally) McHugh. was pre-deceased by her sister Bernadette M. Whalen, and Alice Carlin and leaves behind her sisters Geraldine Hamilton and Sarah North as well as her brothers-in-law Robert "Bob" F. Whalen and Gregory T. North. She was a devoted aunt to Edward Hamilton and his wife Beverly and their children Ethan and Simon. Mark and Patricia Lonesky and their child Sean and Peter and Mary Thompson and their children Peter and Lauren.
Maureen grew up in Philadelphia and graduated from West Catholic High School. She pursued a career in nursing graduating from Misericordia Hospital and was an outstanding Intensive Care Nurse. She joined the US Navy in September 1981 and was stationed at the Bethesda Naval Hospital where she was Staff nurse and then Charge Nurse. Her journey as a healer and caregiver was marked by her unwavering commitment to her patients and her extraordinary skill as a nurse.
Maureen's life was no stranger to suffering, disappointment and pain. Her career was cut short by devastating disease. She became ill in 1981, developing severe rheumatoid arthritis. She was placed on a Temporary Disability Retired List and then Honorably discharged in August 1982.
Returning home to live with her family, Maureen suffered greatly for years. Eventually she moved in with her sister Alice and brother-in-law Bill Carlin.
Despite her difficulties she obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Rosemont and spent several years volunteering with hospice.
She lived 30 plus years with Alice, and they eventually moved to Sunrise of Newtown Square. Maureen was then transferred to the Quadrangle in Haverford where she passed gently this year.
Those who knew Maureen will remember her for the love she had for her family, dedication to her profession, service to her country and her quick wit and mischievous spirit. Her legacy is one of unwavering commitment to the welfare of others and an example of what it means to live a life of purpose and love.
The viewing will be held Dec. 11, 2024, from 6 – 8:00 PM at Logan-Videon Funeral Home, 2001 Sproul Rd., Broomall, PA 19008. Mass will be held Dec 12, 2024, 10:00 AM at St. Pius X Church, 220 Lawrence Rd., Broomall, PA 19008 followed by interment at Ss. Peter & Paul Cemetery, Springfield, PA.
