Mary Beth Gallagher (née O’Connor), age 85, of West Chester, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 2, 2025, in Philadelphia, PA, following a brief illness. Born on September 11, 1940, in Philadelphia, she was the cherished daughter of Arthur and Mary O’Connor.
She was a devoted wife to her beloved husband, John, and a loving mother and Grammy. She dedicated her life to creating a home filled with warmth, joy, and care. Her love was evident in the festive decorations that marked every holiday, the thoughtful gifts she gave for countless occasions, and the welcoming home she offered to many adopted dogs. Her kindness and radiant smile touched everyone she met.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, John. She is survived by their children: John Gallagher (Tracy), Maureen Reed (Mitch), and Beth Bush (Dan); and by her cherished grandchildren: Jack, Allie, Christian, Patryk, and Joseph. She also leaves behind many loving nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
Throughout her professional life, she devoted herself to caring for others. She began her nursing career working in several local hospitals. After the birth of her children, she chose to become a full-time mother, generously volunteering as the school nurse at St. Louis Elementary School. Later, she volunteered to provide compassionate support to a local mother living with ALS. Once her son entered high school, she resumed part-time nursing at area nursing homes, continuing her service until retirement.
A viewing and Mass to honor and celebrate Mary Beth’s life will be held on Thursday, October 16, 2025, at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in West Chester, PA. The viewing will begin at 9:30 AM, followed by a funeral Mass at 11:00 AM.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mary Beth’s memory to the Delaware Humane Society, Attention: Philanthropy Team, 455 Station Christiana Road, Newark, DE 19713, giving@hapde.org.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Penn Medicine and Merrill Gardens for their compassionate care.
