Mary L. (née McHale) Kennedy
Mary L. Kennedy, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully at the age of 90 on November 13, 2024. She was married for 61 years to her late husband, James Kennedy, and together they created a life full of love, laughter, and devotion.
Born and raised in the vibrant Grays Ferry neighborhood of South Philadelphia, Mary cherished her roots. She and Jim raised their family there, and even after moving to North Cape May, New Jersey for retirement, South Philly always held a special place in her heart. "There’s no place like South Philly," she would often say with a smile.
Mary was deeply proud of her role as a mother. Her love for her children was boundless, and even in her final days, her family remained her constant concern. As an only child, Mary always dreamed of having a large family, and she made that dream come true, raising eight children who became her closest companions, confidants, and best friends. She instilled in them the importance of family, teaching them to always look out for one another and to love fiercely.
Her home was a reflection of her warmth and care. Mary had a keen eye for design, and her beautiful home was always meticulously kept and lovingly decorated. Whether it was her signature window treatments that changed with the seasons or the delicious, home-cooked meals she prepared each evening, Mary’s home was always a place of comfort and love. She was a master at creating a welcoming atmosphere, and her family always felt special in her presence.
Mary worked for over 30 years at Fidelity Bank in South Philadelphia, where she became a beloved figure among her customers. People would wait for hours to be helped by Mrs. Kennedy, a testament to her exceptional kindness, warmth, and expertise. Her wit and charm made her a joy to be around, and her deep knowledge of banking and finances was unmatched. Wherever she went, she was greeted with fondness by those whose lives she had touched.
A devoted Catholic with a strong, unwavering faith, Mary found comfort in her prayers, especially her daily recitation of the Rosary. She had a special devotion to the Blessed Mother, and her faith guided her through life’s many challenges. Mary never complained or faltered, no matter what obstacles she faced. Her resilience was remarkable, and her positive outlook on life was a beacon for all who knew her.
Mary’s 90th birthday earlier this year was a joyous occasion, celebrated with family and friends who gathered to honor her remarkable life. She worked tirelessly, lived selflessly, and above all, loved deeply. As the heart of every family holiday, especially Christmas, Mary made her home a place of joy and warmth, and her legacy will forever be cherished
Mary’s legacy lives on through her children: Patricia (David) Penn, James (Kathleen), Jean (the late Michael) Green, William (Colleen), John (Cindy), Catherine (Michael) McGee, and Brian Kennedy. Mary was predeceased by her daughter Mary Norbeck and son-in-law Dennis Norbeck. She was a devoted grandmother to 14 grandchildren: Lauren (Brian) Adams, Jill (John) Tighe, David (Tracie) Penn, Natalie (Dan) Hering, Conor (Kristen) Kennedy, Courtney McGee, Michael (Lindsey) McGee, Caitlin Kennedy, Michael (Annamarie) Green, Sean Kennedy, Meghan Kennedy, Liam Kennedy, Kevin Kennedy, and Robert Kennedy. Her love extended to her great-grandchildren, Jacob and Abigail Adams, Ryann and McKenna Penn, Chelsie and Noelle Hering, Riley and Finnegan Kennedy, and Avery and Reese McGee, each of whom she adored and cherished.
