Lorraine Anne Murray, February 1, 1935 – September 10, 2021, 86
Her wonderful life journey began in South Philadelphia, as Lorraine was born to Robert and Amelia (Reinke) McLaughlin. Beloved youngest sister to Robert (Ann), Edwin (Elaine), and Norman McLaughlin. Reared in Saint Alphonsus parish, she attended John W. Hallahan Catholic Girls High School and graduated with the class of 52’. Disney trips were very special to her as Minnie Mouse is the school mascot (with permission from Walt Disney).
Lorraine was courted by and then married to Tech Sergeant Charles J. Murray in 1955. Together they were stationed at several bases in the United States as he served in the Air Force. During the years in the service they started their family with Barbara (Joe) DiLossi, followed by Eileen (Greg) Burrows. Then came along Robert (Mary) Murray and rounding out the family with Dennis (Carol) Murray. The years traveling around the United States were very formidable as Lorraine and Charlie grew their family. They developed much wisdom and courage with the military life and the rewards were tremendous for their family. Charlie also had several deployments overseas during his twenty-one year military career while Lorraine kept the home front going at 2nd and Tree Street. They were married forty-five years before his death in 1999. Friday, September 10, 2021 was also their sixty-sixth wedding anniversary.
After Charlie’s retirement from the Air Force, Lorraine and Charlie settled in the wonderful borough of Yeadon, PA in 1970. Her family grew lasting bonds with many, many wonderful neighborhood friends. Relationships have grown and continued over the years. She also enjoyed many monthly gatherings with the Yeadon ladies that continue today.
When her children grew older, Lorraine started a career at Girard Bank in Philadelphia. She worked and managed through several bank mergers over the years. She later moved to the University of Pennsylvania as the financial manager of all parking facilities. She retired in 2008. In retirement she remained very active with Saint Bernadette of Lourdes Parish in Drexel Hill and Saint Kevin’s Pioneers senior group where she was Vice President.
Lorraine (Nana) was very blessed with eight grandchildren: Jason (Erin) Burrows, Christen (Dane) Pinsky, Kevin (Terrianne) Burrows, Ashley (Colin) Cunningham, Andrew (with angel wings), Adam, Kaitlyn and Eric (Michaela Groff) Murray. She was also very blessed with eight great grandchildren: Harlow, Logan, Aly, Wyatt, Arya, Melaina, Darry, and Asher.
Lorraine was a fiercely independent and active woman and she loved to see and do it all. She enjoyed weekend or day trips with her family to just about anywhere. She especially enjoyed being with family on annual vacations at the shore. She loved experimenting and sharing her recipes on weekends and with holiday meals.
Lorraine was blessed with great companionship of many friends, family, and extended family, especially her dear sisters-in-law Bunny Jordan & Elaine McLaughlin along with her beloved childhood friends Bernadette & Joe Lennon and Cass Kimrey.
She was the life of many gatherings, especially as her grandchildren became adults. She admittingly wasn’t fond of Halloween, yet at the annual parties, she won many best costume awards as she enjoyed being a character. She had an infectious belly laugh that truly made you laugh along with her.
Thank you Lorraine (Mom, Aunt Lorraine, Nana, Gram) for sharing your love, joy, affection, wisdom, and laughter with each of us. You will be deeply missed.
