Lawrence R. "Larry" Doran, 83, of Secane, Pennsylvania, formerly longtime resident of Yeadon, passed away peacefully on November 11, 2023. Born on June 8, 1940, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Larry was a man of great thoughtfulness, faith, and passion.
Larry was a proud 1958 graduate of West Catholic High School for Boys. He carried the values and discipline he learned there throughout his life, shaping him into the remarkable man he was. After his graduation, Larry embarked on a long and successful career at the United States Postal Service. His meticulous nature and keen eye for detail led him to serve as an accountant at the main post office at 30th and Market Streets for over 40 years. Even after his retirement, Larry remained connected to the USPS community, serving on the board of many postal credit unions.
In addition to his professional accomplishments, Larry served his community as a Sexton at the Blessed Virgin Mary Church in Darby, PA for many years. His faith was a cornerstone of his life, providing him with guidance and comfort. He was a dedicated servant of the church, and his faith-filled spirit touched everyone he met.
Larry was a man of simple pleasures. He enjoyed playing Pinochle, whether during summer nights at the swim club or later with his buddies from the Galileo Club. While he would take an occasional trip to the Casino, he loved watching and betting on horse racing. Larry also had a penchant for a good cigar and took delight in procuring custom t-shirts, hats, and wine glasses that proudly displayed his last name and his Irish heritage.
He was the proudest Dad who never missed a swim meet, sports game, or school function. He made the best "practice math tests" and took his role of "Mr. Starter" for summer swim meets very seriously. He was also the most dedicated Poppy to Evelyn and James; always present for their activities and the small and big life milestones.
Larry is survived by his two children, Christopher (Cassandra) Doran of Glenolden, PA, and Meighan Doran of Conshohocken, PA. He was a beloved grandfather to Evelyn Elizabeth and James Nicholas. Larry is also survived by his two sisters, Dolores (John) Cardillo of Rutherford, NJ, and Kathleen (Bob) Wilson of Springfield, VA, and his brother William (Peggy) Doran of Prospect Park, PA. He was a cherished godfather to Dolores Hartshorne, Daniel Cardillo, and Kelly Doran. Larry leaves behind many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will miss his thoughtful presence and his quick wit and strong sense of humor. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Julia Doran, his parents, William and Elizabeth Doran, and his late brother, James Doran.
Larry will be remembered for his unwavering faith, his passion for life, and his thoughtfulness towards others. His legacy will live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and all those who had the privilege of knowing him. We celebrate Larry's life and take comfort in knowing that he is now reunited with his beloved wife, Julia, as well as his brother Jimmy and other family members in eternal peace.
