Kendal Renee Barbee (Van Wambeke) died on April 1, 2026, surrounded by her family. She was a devoted mother, daughter, and friend, known for her steady strength, quick smile, and the way she showed up for people when they needed her most.
Kendal was the loving mother of Jordan Barbee and Cameron Barbee, who were the focus of her pride and love. She is also survived by her husband, Dennis Barbee, her mother, Carla Van Wambeke (Ladwig), and her father, Joel Van Wambeke, along with a large extended family of cousins, relatives, and close friends who felt like family. She shared a lifelong bond with her cousins, whom she often called her brothers.
Kendal was a longtime member of the Haverford Township community. She built lasting relationships through her involvement and her willingness to help wherever she was needed. She served as co-president of the Haverford High School Band and Orchestra Parents Association and was the driving force behind the “Dog House” concession stand at football games, where many will remember her energy, organization, and friendly presence.
She spent more than 26 years at the University of Pennsylvania, supporting students, faculty, and staff. Her work mattered to her because people mattered to her. She believed in equality for everyone, in giving others a chance, and in doing the right thing even when it was not easy.
Kendal earned a Master of Education from Azusa Pacific University and a Bachelor of Social Work from Calvin University, reflecting her lifelong commitment to helping others.
She loved being outdoors and found joy in time spent hiking, biking, and exploring with her family. Trips to Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park were especially meaningful, filled with good food, long days outside, and time together. She was always there to encourage her kids every step of the way, even if it came with a little well-timed cussing along the trail.
Kendal took great pride in her children and their talents. Jordan, an artist, and Cameron, a musician, were a constant source of joy. In her final days, as they played a duet for her in her hospital room, her family knew she was smiling.
Her dog, Hudson, was rarely far from her side. She valued time with friends, honest conversation, and the simple moments that brought people together.
Kendal stood up for others. She spoke plainly, acted with purpose, and cared deeply about justice and equality. The people in her life knew they could count on her.
This quote that Kendal had on her home office desk reflects how Kendal lived:
“Only if we understand, will we care. Only if we care, will we help. Only if we help shall all be saved.” — Jane Goodall
