Joyce Purcell Obituary

Joyce Barnett Purcell, daughter of Norman Caleb and Mae Barnett and sister of Marjorie Barnett Schiliro entered this world in the midst of the "Roaring Twenties" on August 4, 1924. While automobiles were replacing horse-drawn carriages and the ice man delivered blocks of ice, Joyce was attending Marcus Hook Elementary School in the town where she grew up. Living through the Great Depression, she graduated from Eddystone High School in the spring of 1942. Following graduation, she went to work for the American Viscose Company.

Joyce loved to dance. Voted "Best Dancer" in her high school yearbook and in her high heeled shoes, she jitterbugged and slow danced to the sounds of the Big Bands such as Benny Goodman and Tommy Dorsey. But the world was at war, and like so many others, she found a way to do her part and worked for the British Army, helping to secure and to process tanks sent to the battlefronts overseas. Her fiance was a casualty of WWII, killed when his plane crashed returning from a mission. As was a common thread of this resilient generation, she met and married her husband, Richard Leonard Purcell, in her home town of Marcus Hook, PA on February 16, 1946. They shared a beautiful love story for almost 58 years until the death of her beloved husband in 2004. Together, they raised their four children and found their church home at St. John Lutheran Church. Joyce was a long-time resident of Springfield, Delaware County until moving to Newtown Square in 2000.

Joyce was a devoted and loving wife and mother of four children: Richard Purcell, married to Nute; Dana, married to Steven Montgomery; Jill, married to Bruce Blackway; and Gail, married to Dale Tshudy. She was the proud grandmother of 12 grandchildren- Tiffany, Joel, Ian, Tasha, Chad, Craig, Steven, Devon, Joshua, Adam, Kimberly, and Richard. She was delighted to be blessed abundantly with many great-grandchildren. She was lovingly known to family and friends as "Mimi".

Joyce B. Purcell, "Mimi", was a part of the greatest generation, rooted in faith, strength, dignity and love. She had a deep and abiding faith in Jesus Christ. She was proud of her country and grateful for the opportunities and lifestyles she enjoyed. She loved her family and friends. She was full of laughter and kindness, fun and so much more. And she enjoyed a good martini, and telling anyone she met that her son graduated from the Naval Academy. She lived to usher in the beginnings of her 100th year, Joyce "Mimi" Purcell went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, January 19, 2024. She was 99 1/2 years old.... and FABULOUS. She is so very loved and so very missed.
