Joseph Hussey Obituary

Joseph J. "Joe" Hussey, born on May 31, 1952, a cherished pillar of the Wilmington community, passed away peacefully on January 13, 2025, at the age of 72. The son of the late Edward and Helen (nee Zarnoch) Hussey, Joe was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend who left an indelible mark on the hearts of those he touched.  He was the youngest of 5 children.

A proud graduate of St. Elizabeth's High School and St. Joseph's University, Joe dedicated his life to educating young minds and coaching basketball. His passion for the sport was unmistakable, earning him the affectionate nicknames "Coach" and "Huss" from players, fans and friends alike. Joe's commitment to excellence was evident when he led the Howard Career Center Men's Team to victory in the Delaware State Basketball Championship in 1985. His legacy as a coach extended beyond the court, as he remained actively involved in mentoring his children and their teams, always eager to share his love for the game.

After his tenure as an educator and coach, Joe transitioned into a successful career as a mortgage loan officer. His thoughtful and passionate approach to his work earned him the respect and trust of his colleagues and clients. Joe's innate ability to connect with people and his desire to go out of his way to help others were qualities that defined his character both professionally and personally.  Unfortunately, Joe had to retire early after suffering a stroke at the age of 47.

Joe's personal life was marked by an unwavering devotion to his family. He was the loving husband of Maureen (nee Hartman) Hussey for 47 years. Loving father to Erin (Bill) Logan, Bridget, Joseph (Denise) and Timothy. Joe's role as a father was one of his greatest joys, and his compassionate spirit shone brightest when surrounded by his family. He was a loving grandfather to Quinn, Billy, Gianna, Vanessa, and Lily.  Loving brother of Susan Hussey Kelleher, Michael (Donna) and the late Sr. Mary Ellen Hussey and Edward Hussey. Brother-in-law of Kathleen Hussey and the late Jack Kelleher.

Joe's interests and impact reached far and wide. He had a great sense of humor and loved to make people laugh.  His dedication to basketball and his community involvement were just a few aspects of his rich life. Those who had the privilege to know Joe understood that he was a man who exemplified thoughtfulness and passion in every facet of his life.
