Joseph Gormley Obituary

Joseph “Joe” Gormley, age 92, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 28, surrounded by his devoted wife of 65 years, Joan (nee Mount) Gormley, and his loving family, at the home of his son and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Mary Gormley, in West Chester, PA. Predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Mary, siblings Doris, William and Thomas, and son-in-law Frank “Dutch” Culbertson. Father of Joan King, Judith Culbertson, Joseph (Tracy), Charles (Denise), Thomas (Mary), and Janet Scully (Michael). Grandfather of Francis King, Monica Bottoms (Stephen), Megan King; Kelly Guenther (Grant), Matthew Culbertson (Brianna), Colleen Culbertson; Erin Dugan (Matthew), Caitlin Gormley, Kerry Orr (Garrett), Molly Gormley, Joseph Charles Gormley; Sean Gormley (Lauren), Thomas Joseph Gormley, Ryan Gormley, Kayla Gormley; Catherine Gormley, Thomas More Gormley, Joseph Michael Gormley, Jack Gormley, Mary Grace Gormley; Liam Scully, Sadie Scully, and Maggie Scully. Great grandfather of Bennett Gormley, Conor Gormley, Conall Orr, and Wyatt Guenther. Also survived by sisters-in-law Carmela Gormley, Sister Marie Mount, IHM, Elizabeth Kane, Regina Mahon, and brother-in-law Charles Mahon, as well as many loving nieces and nephews.

Mr. Gormley was born in West Philadelphia and was a proud graduate of St. Thomas More High School’s Class of 1948 and a founding member of the St Thomas More Alumni Association. He proudly served in the United States Navy from 1951 through 1955. He married Joan Mount on February 15, 1958 and the couple enjoyed spending time with their six children, 23 grandchildren, and four great grandchildren. Mr. Gormley was a long-time resident of Collingdale, PA., and Drexel Hill, PA. He was a dedicated employee for Shulman Air Freight and Conrail, and in his retirement served as a volunteer for Meals on Wheels and as a CCD teacher at St. Joseph’s in Collingdale. He worked as an usher for the Philadelphia Phillies, in maintenance for St. Kevin’s parish in Springfield, and as a crossing guard for the Upper Darby School District. He was a devoted member of St. Joseph’s parish in Collingdale, St. Eugene’s parish in Primos, the Knights of Columbus, Monsignor Bonner Fathers’ Club, and Briarcliffe Swim Club. He was also an active volunteer for the Collingdale Athletic Club, serving as a youth baseball coach and umpire. He enjoyed celebrating New Year’s Day and was a long-time participant in the Philadelphia Mummer’s Parade. He will always be remembered for his boundless energy and selfless acts of kindness.

Relatives and friends are invited to greet family on Monday, June 5, 2023 from 9:30 A.M. to 12:00 P.M. at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church, 1325 Boot Road, West Chester, PA 19380, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 12:30 P.M.  Interment at a later date.
