John Francis Mitchell of West Chester, age 88, died on July 4, 2022, stating that he was ready to “go home and be reunited with my wife.” As one family friend said, “Your mom will be greeting him with open arms, and this country will celebrate their reunion with fireworks!!”
Dad was born on July 30, 1933 in Darby. His parents John and Helen (O’Neill) Mitchell and his sister Helen Mary Mitchell preceded him in death. Dad started his career as a Service Lineman when he was in the Army. He served in Germany as part of the peacekeeping forces during the Korean War. He was able, during that time, to visit Ireland. Dad was very proud of his Irish heritage. His favorite color was green!
It was when Dad went to visit an army buddy in the hospital that he met Patricia Mary Ruane. They married on February 9, 1957 and enjoyed 62 years as husband and wife. Having only one sibling himself, Dad and Mom gave birth to five children of their own, Patti, Johnny, Dave (Carol), Donna (Joe), Patrick (Marilyn). He is also survived by three grandchildren Dave (Bre), Dustin and Hunter, and a great grandchild expected in August.
We are grateful to Kim Cavaliere and the PA Agency of Nurses, Angel Companions, Dr. George Limpert and Gateway Medical Associates, and Shireen Kline and all at Arbour Square of West Chester for the care they provided to Dad over the years.
Services will be held on Wednesday, July 13th at St. Maximilian Kolbe Church, 15 East Pleasant Grove Road, West Chester, PA 19382. Visitation will begin at 8:45 AM followed by Mass at 10:00 and burial at St. Agnes Cemetery.
Dad loved to go fishing and hunting with his sons, grandsons and friends. He also loved growing vegetables in his garden. In lieu of flowers please consider making a donation in Dad’s memory to Melmark, 2600 Wayland Road, Berwyn, PA 19312 (www.Melmark.org), Wounded Warriors, or a charity of your choice or eat some home grown tomatoes or string beans and wear green.
