John D. Laessig, Sr., known as John or Donnie, passed away on May 13, 2026, at the age of 94 in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania where he lived since 1970.
Born on January 5, 1932, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late Henry B. and Ann (Koll) Laessig. John grew up in Narberth, PA and was a graduate of Lower Merion High School. He went on to earn his Bachelor of Science in Engineering from Drexel University. His career as an engineer included many patents for his inventions. He was especially proud of his contributions to the development of the first Sidewinder missile. Later in his career, he became an owner of a manufacturing company and retired at the age of 70. His interests included hiking and cave exploration, and he was one of the earliest members of the National Speleological Society.
He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Patricia Ann (Pierce) Laessig; his four children, Diane Laessig and her husband, Mark Green, Donna (Laessig) Donato and her husband, Greg, John Laessig, Jr. and his wife, Brenda, and Susan Laessig and her husband, Sung Han. He was a proud and loving father and took great joy in the lives and accomplishments of his children. He also leaves behind his beloved grandchildren, Jennifer Donato and her fiancé, Tristan Rozea, Bryan Donato, Julia Laessig, John Laessig III, Lianna Han, and Kyle Han, each of whom brought him immense pride and happiness. He was preceded in death by his brother, the late Henry Laessig, and his wife, Marie.
Throughout his life, John was known for his loving nature, his sense of humor, and his quiet intelligence. His memory will be treasured by all who were fortunate enough to know him.
Family and friends are invited to a visitation for John on Wednesday, May 20, 2026 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Logan-Videon Funeral Home, 2001 Sproul Rd., Broomall, PA 19008. Funeral Ceremony will follow in the funeral home. Burial will be in Media Cemetery, Media, PA.
