Joan Ranieri Obituary

In Loving Memory of Joan Merrick Ranieri
Beloved Wife, Mom, Mom-Mom, Sister, Nurse, and Woman of Faith

With hearts full of love and deep sorrow, we announce the passing of Joan Merrick Ranieri on July 17, 2025, surrounded by the family she held so dear. She was 83.

Joan was born on October 20, 1941, in Philadelphia, the beloved daughter of Walton B. and Dorothy E. (Heckman) Merrick.

From a young age, Joan felt called to care for others. She pursued nursing, graduating from The Hospital of Pennsylvania School of Nursing, and went on to dedicate her life to the healing profession. Joan gave 35 years of service to Lankenau Medical Center, where she was deeply respected for her gentle presence and clinical excellence. Even in retirement, her desire to serve continued—she volunteered 15 years at Community Volunteers in Medicine (CVIM), providing care to those without access to healthcare.

Joan lived a life defined by grace, compassion, and unwavering faith. A devoted wife, loving mother, treasured Mom-Mom, loyal sister, and deeply caring nurse, she touched every life she encountered with her warmth, her strength—and her beautiful smile.

Guided by a deep and quiet faith, Joan lived in service to others. Her love knew no limits, and her gentle spirit made everyone feel safe and seen. As a nurse, she gave comfort to countless lives. At home, she gave her whole heart to her family, nurturing them with kindness, patience, and unconditional love.

Joan’s grandchildren were the light of her life. As “Mom-Mom,” she created a world of joy and comfort: sleepovers filled with bedtime stories and snuggles, games of hide and seek played throughout the house, ball games thumping cheerfully off the sliding glass door, and a never-ending supply of candy and laughter. When they were sick, she was there with warm blankets, quiet prayers, and the healing touch that only she could offer. Her presence made everything better.

She shared a beautiful life with her beloved husband, Bob, and together they built a home full of faith, joy, and enduring love. Her smile could light up a room, and her loving spirit wrapped around everyone she met like a warm embrace.

In her final days, Joan was surrounded by her dearest family and friends—sharing smiles, “I love you’s,” and their fondest memories. Her room was filled with laughter, warmth, and gratitude for a life so beautifully lived.

She is survived by her children, Jay Munro/Jennifer Heller Munro, Dean Munro/Lisa Cellucci Munro, Deborah Ranieri, Holly Ranieri, and Robert Ranieri; her grandchildren, Alex, Brooke, Drew, and Ryan; her sister, Jean Merrick Mitchell/John Mitchell; and many nieces, nephews, and cherished friends. She is now reunited in peace with those who went before her, held forever in God’s embrace including her loving husband, the late Mario "Robert" Ranieri and her sister, the late Jane Merrick Shaw.

Family and friends are invited to gather to honor the remarkable woman who gave so much and loved so well.  Visitation will be on Friday, August 22nd, 2025, from 10:00 to 11:00 AM in the Tyler Auditorium at Lima Estates, 411 Middletown Road, Media, PA 19063.
