Jean Ellen Morton, age 86, passed away on Sunday, August 10th, following a long battle with Alzheimers. Jean is survived by her husband George Henry Morton Jr, and their four children, Jon Morton (Cheryl), Dawn Mattia (John), Claudine Niness (Jim), and Colleen Oleykowski (Joe). She is also survived by her brother Robert O’Driscoll, his wife Rose, and their son Rob (Stephanie).
Born Jean Ellen O’Driscoll (December 29, 1938) in Sheboygan WI to her parents, Robert and Ruth O’Driscoll, Jean grew up in Sheboygan and later moved to Broomall PA during her Senior year in High School. There she later met and married George in 1963. In 1969 they relocated to West Chester PA, where they raised their family and remained in this home for over 50 years. Jean was also blessed with 7 grandchildren (Jason, Christopher, Devon, Matthew, Carter, Stephanie, and Mikayla), and more recently 4 great-grandchildren (Cole, Dominic, Cameron, and Damien).
While first and foremost a mother and grandmother, Jean also held several roles throughout her adult life. A bookkeeper, a teacher’s aide, a floral designer, and then a realtor were just a few of the positions she held. Jean loved to garden and could often be seen tending to her many gardens over the years. A talented seamstress, Jean was quick to upholster furniture, or make clever costumes for her children and then later her grandchildren. She was also a longtime member of Christ Memorial Lutheran Church in Malvern, PA where she participated in their choir. Her love for music was evident to all. Even when her disease took away so much of her personality over the years, she could still be seen swaying to music and clapping her hands to the beat. Jean and George were also avid vintage car enthusiasts and owners of several unique and collectible vehicles. They spent many of their Saturday mornings attending local and regional car shows and were members of several prominent car clubs in the area.
While her love for her children and grandchildren was evident, even more apparent was her love for her “George”. Always by her side and a partner through and through, George was her best friend and her favorite shoulder to rest her head on. For most of their marriage, Jean would prepare dinner for George when he came home from working long hard hours at Philadelphia Electric Company. Later, when her disease took away her ability to do so, George, in turn, took over those duties and cared for her. For 62 years they cultivated a relationship that many aspire to, but only a few have.
A visitation with the family is scheduled for Sunday, August 17th from 10:30-11:30, followed by a service at the Logan-Videon Funeral Home, located at 2001 Sproul Road, Broomall PA.
