James ‘Chico’ Chambers passed away peacefully on April 14, 2021. Born February 5, 1933 in Philadelphia, Chico lived in Grays Ferry for most of his life. He is predeceased by his wife Susan (Finnegan), his sons, Kevin, John, and Christopher and survived by his children, James (Maureen) Chambers, Kathleen (Lenny) DiBella, MaryRita (Michael) Sharpless, Emily Chambers, and Bridgit,(Eric) Johnson, 22 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren.
Chico was a devoted and loving husband and father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, brother, and friend. He worked for many years at the A&P and retired from the Philadelphia Parking Authority.
Chico was a legend in the neighborhood, driving around in his Mustang, honking and waving to friends and family, who’d call out, “Hey, Chico! How ya doing?”
Besides, Gray’s Ferry, Chico’s favorite place to be was the Jersey Shore with his family, having a few drinks, telling stories, and enjoying time with family and friends.
Chico loved singing and no party or wedding was complete without a few songs from him.
Always the coolest guy in the room, Chico will be missed by all who knew him. He’ll be remembered every time we hear a Sinatra song or see a Mustang cruising down the street. We’ll drink a toast for him as the sun sets in Wildwood.
