James Skeete Obituary

James Clement Skeete passed away peacefully in his home on July 21, 2021. James, known to his family and friends as Clem, was born to Mary Skeete on December 16, 1937 in New Amsterdam, East Berbice, British Guiana, South America. He was raised with his cousins in Edinburgh, East Berbice, British Guiana by his aunt and uncle. At the age of 17, he began working on a merchant ship and settled in England for many years. During his time in England, he earned a certificate in the trade of machinery. After receiving his certificate, he was offered employment in the United States as a machinist with Stein Seal Company (formally Bissinger & Stein, Inc.) in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, which he remained for 30 years until retirement. After retirement, Clem earned a Bachelor’s in Religious Studies from Cannon Bible College, was actively involved in church, volunteered for years with Philabundance and enjoyed spending time with his family.

Clem loved to watch sports, dance and sing, play chess, checkers and dominoes with family and friends. He also loved to listen to calypso, soca, classic rhythm & blues, and country music.

He always had a big smile whenever people saw him and loved his grandchildren deeply. Clem is survived by his son Fitzvaughn and his daughter Romona, grandchildren, a host of siblings, nieces and nephews.

Those who knew Clem, knew how much he loved Guyana and wanted to be back home. In honor of his wishes, his cremains will be taken back home at a later date. He was an amazing person and will be greatly missed.
