James Richard Smith

James Richard Smith, known lovingly as Jim, passed away on June 17, 2026, in Bryn Mawr at the age of 99.

Born on March 31, 1927, in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late John W. and Luretta (Pride) Smith. Jim lived a long and full life marked by devotion to his family, a strong work ethic, and a steady, caring presence that will be remembered by all who knew him. He was a loving, handy, and generous man whose quiet strength touched the lives of many.

Jim was an HVAC mechanic for most of his career at MacLaren’s  but spent the last 10 or so years as the Service Manager for them until his retirement in 1997. He was respected for his skill, reliability, and practical nature, and he took pride in doing his work well. His hands were often busy fixing, building, or helping, and he was the kind of man others could count on when something needed to be done. His career reflected the same qualities that defined his life, including patience, dependability, and a willingness to help without hesitation.

Outside of work, Jim found joy in simple and meaningful pleasures. He enjoyed reading political novels and thrillers, and he appreciated a good story that held his attention. He loved to walk, and those walks gave him time for reflection and peace. Jim was a spiritual man, though not religious, and he carried himself with a thoughtful and grounded outlook on life. He also took great pleasure in attending activities with and for his grandchildren, and those moments brought him immense happiness and pride.

Family was central to Jim’s life. He is survived by his daughters, Sandra Hogan of Newtown Square and Debra Ludwick and her husband, Craig, of Broomall. He was a proud grandfather to Bethany Hogan; Derek Ludwick and his girlfriend, Riley Johnson; Devin Ludwick; Dylan Ludwick; and Drake Ludwick. He also leaves behind three great-grandchildren, Kieran, Kayden, and Melody, who brought added joy to his later years.

Jim was preceded in death by his brothers, the late John “Jack” Smith, Jr., Robert “Bob” Smith, and Lewis “Jiggs” Smith. He is also survived by two nephews and six nieces, all of whom will remember him with love and affection. The bonds he shared with his family were lasting and meaningful, and his presence will be deeply missed at family gatherings and in everyday life.

Those who knew Jim will remember a man of steady character and warm heart. He had a way of making others feel welcome and valued, and his generous spirit was evident in the way he lived each day. Whether through his work, his family life, or the simple kindnesses he extended to others, Jim left behind a legacy of love and integrity. His memory will continue to live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know him.
