James “Jimmy” Dowling, 87, of Lady Lake, Florida, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, March 16, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.
Born on September 18, 1938, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Mary McGrath Dowling and Carole Dowling, Jimmy grew up in West Philadelphia and graduated from John Bartram High School. Soon after graduation, he married his high school sweetheart, Adrienne, and together they built a beautiful family in Yeadon, Pennsylvania, raising six children with love, laughter, and devotion.
Jimmy proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy for four years before beginning a long and dedicated career as a fitter welder for General Electric in South Philadelphia, where he worked for 35 years. He was a hard worker who took pride in everything he did, and, in life, he built for his family.
Later in life, Jimmy found and married his soulmate, Mary Anne. They shared over forty wonderful years together, filled with love, travel, and laughter.
After retirement, Jimmy found his true calling on the water. As “Captain Jim,” he discovered joy in boating—first at the Riverside Yacht Club in Essington, Pennsylvania, where friends taught him the ropes, and later at the Eastern Yacht Club in Essex, Maryland. He and Mary Anne spent countless happy days exploring the Chesapeake Bay with family and friends, creating memories that will last forever.
In later years, Jimmy and Mary Anne made their home in The Villages, Florida—a place he truly adored. He loved every minute of retirement there: golfing, socializing, and reminding everyone he met, with his trademark smile, “I just love this place.” His friends even had those words embroidered on a golf shirt for him—a small gesture that perfectly captured his enthusiasm for life and gratitude for every moment.
Jimmy loved so many things—boating, golfing, Villanova basketball, the South Jersey shore, and cheering (loudly!) for the Philadelphia Eagles—but nothing meant more to him than his family. He was a devoted husband, father, stepfather, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. He had a generous heart, endless curiosity, and a spirit that lifted everyone around him. There was truly nothing he wouldn’t do for someone he cared about.
Jimmy is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Mary Anne Dowling; his children James Dowling Jr., Kathleen Dowling Kiesel, Robert Dowling, Joseph Dowling, and Edward Dowling; his stepson, Kevin O’Donnell; and his stepdaughter, Kristen Naber.
He was predeceased by his son, Michael Dowling, and his first wife, Adrienne. He also leaves behind nine grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren who brought him immeasurable joy.
To know Jimmy was to love him. His laughter, generosity, and zest for life will live on in the hearts of everyone who knew him.
Relatives and friends are invited to his Funeral Mass 11:00 AM Saturday, May 9, 2026 at St. Louis Church, 820 W. Cobbs Creek Blvd, Yeadon, PA 19050.
Donations in his memory may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, a cause dear to his heart.
