Georgianne McVay

Georgianne McVay, age 97, of Philadelphia, PA, passed from this earth on Sunday, April 19, 2026. She was born on January 15, 1929 and raised in Fort Smith, Arkansas. She is preceded in death by her parents George A. McVay and Ethel Spratt McVay, and her brother David H. McVay of Arkansas. She is survived by nephew David S. McVay (Mary) of Tennessee, niece Becky McVay Birch of Arkansas, Carolyn Harmon of Philadelphia and several great-nieces and nephews. As a young adult, she moved to Philadelphia to pursue her education. In Philadelphia, she quickly found herself a community to which she belonged. She achieved a Ph. D from the University of Pennsylvania in 1971. Following her Ph. D, she enjoyed a very long career of teaching both English courses and American History and Literature. She loved education and spent her life devoted to passing along the vast amount of knowledge she had accumulated throughout her life, teaching well into her 80s. She will be remembered fondly by those who knew her and loved her deeply.
