George E. Bendinger, of Gladwyne, previously of Gulph Mills passed away on June 19th, 2022 in his home in Waverly Heights surrounded by his loving daughters. He was 92 years of age. He attended St. Joseph's Prep and graduated in 1947. Loving husband of 61 years to the late Joan A. (nee Weiser) Bendinger. Loving father of Joan (Glenn) Soltis, Virginia B. Wischhusen, Regina (the late Glenn) Gausz, Chris (Mark) Mullen and Ann (Frank ) DeMonte. He was also survived by 10 grandchildren and 17 great-grand children.
George Bendinger was a man of vision and energy. He started as a salesman for several companies after graduating from Saint Joseph’s Prep but wanted to channel that vision and energy into his own business. In the mid 60's, with his brother Joseph, they put together a group of suppliers and manufacturers of school related clothing and accessories that they managed out of an office in Philadelphia.
George was a keen judge of people and of their skills and potential. Over the coming years with his team he built a very successful manufacturing company based in Manayunk. Bendinger Brothers supplied quality uniforms, made in the USA, for 28+ years, for school systems up and down the East Coast.
Market forces caused George to make the difficult decision to move some manufacturing to the Dominican Republic in order to compete. He continued to purchase US fabric and trimmings, and maintained design, cutting and shipping in Manayunk. The offshore manufacturing provided him with the opportunity to start new companies that manufactured uniforms for airlines, fast food companies and sporting groups. He and his team of successful women operated several successful businesses off shore at an age most folks have long since retired. Although age and energy required George to pass the baton to his daughter Virginia, he was always available for advice, insight or just to reminisce on life's ups and downs in the six decades he was involved in the rag business.
