Born in Philadelphia, PA on November 22, 1927, he was the son of the late Clarence and Helen (McNerney) Shappell. He grew up in Philadelphia in a large family of 4 brothers and 2 sisters. He attended John Bartram High School in Philadelphia, PA and then served in the US Navy from 1946 to 1947 as a Seaman First Class. After completing his service Fred returned to Philadelphia and returned to work for Acme Markets, where he had been working since he was 11 years old. He was married twice, first to Joyce (McHenry), the mother of his 3 children, who passed in 1969 and then to Lorraine (Deets) who passed in 2022.

Fred lived the majority of his life and raised his family in Havertown, PA. A longtime member of Havertown United Methodist Church, he served his church community in many capacities. He enjoyed growing plants (many of which he gave away), working around the house and garden, and the numerous dogs he had over the years.

Fred is survived by his three children Fred Shappell Jr and wife Becky of Danville, Pa., Penny Wolf and husband Stephen of Bridgewater, NJ, and Richard Shappell and wife Joyce of Chalfont, PA. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Sean (Jessie) Shappell, Blair (James) Poole, Jessica Wolf, Madison Wolf, Hope Shappell, and Hannah Shappell and four great-grandchildren, Ava Shappell, Adler Shappell, Elijah Poole, and Theodore Poole and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wives, he was proceeded in death by his six siblings, Russell, Virginia, Robert, Harry, Danny, and Julia.

The family would like to thank all the staff, residents, and their family members of Maria Joseph Emmanuel Center for Nursing for all the love and care they extended during his final years.
