Elinore Phillips Obituary

Elinore M. Phillips, passed away peacefully on November 24, 2024, in Sewell, NJ, at the age of 87. Born on December 30, 1936, in Philadelphia, PA, Elinore was the cherished daughter of the late Francis and Dorothy (nee McSorley) Mullen, and a guiding light to all who knew her.

Elinore, a graduate of West Catholic Girls High School, was renowned for her exceptional talent as a seamstress. Her hands lovingly crafted not only the fabric of her children’s clothes but also the tapestry of their cherished memories. From dress coats with fur trim and matching hand muffs purses to suits for her boys, Elinore's creations were a testament to her dedication and creativity. Even the infamous purple suit for Mark, despite his initial reluctance, became a fond family anecdote. Her playful attempt at making underwear, though met with unanimous discomfort, showcased her willingness to try anything for her family—even if it meant conceding to their preferences with good humor.  She also enjoyed doing arts and crafts projects and all of her children have holiday decorations made by mom for every holiday.

Elinore's love story with her beloved husband, William H. Phillips, began when they were married on September 1, 1956.  Bill married the love of his life and remarkably they just recently celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary.   Elinore was a loving mother to William H. Phillips, Jr., Nadine (Chuck) Staats, Mark (Barbara) Phillips, Suzanne (the late Mario) DelConte, and Diane D'Ambrosio. Her warmth extended to her role as a doting grandmother, leaving behind a legacy of love and cherished moments with her 8 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. Her siblings, Francis Mullen and Dorothy McGuckin, will remember her as a loving sister whose gentle presence was a source of comfort and joy.  She was predeceased by her loving grandson, Daniel Staats and loving granddaughter, Bridget Phillips.

Her life was punctuated by moments of advocacy and support, such as when she championed her children's desire for bell-bottom jeans during the hippie phase, skillfully crafting them with the same care that she put into all her projects. Elinore's love for the beach was only rivaled by her love for helping her children. She was often found digging racecars into the sand for the boys and turning the girls into mermaids or teaching us how to make the best drizzle sand castles.  She was also the best cook and baker!   Most of all she loved spending time with her family and always putting them first in her life!  She was their fiercest defender and would do anything to help and protect them.  Mom would always listen and offer advice without judgment.  She was the best friend to each of her children.  She was the embodiment of a loving, gentle, and selfless spirit—qualities that defined her as much as her skilled hands.  “She was the best Mother you could ever ask for and we will carry her love in our hearts forever.”

Elinore's legacy will be carried on not only through the cherished memories of her family but also through the countless lives she touched with her kindness. She will be profoundly missed, yet her presence will continue to resonate in the laughter of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren as well as the family gatherings, and every stitch of love she left behind.
