Eleanor Stevens Obituary

Eleanor V. (Van Dyke) Stevens, Gladwyne, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 26, 2022 in Waverly Heights, Gladwyne. She was the wife of the late Dr. Lloyd W. Stevens. 

Born in Englewood, New Jersey on March 4, 1932, Eleanor was a daughter of the late George Malcolm and Margaret Gordon Mahy Van Dyke. After graduating from Lansdowne High School, she went on to the University of Rochester and then Presbyterian University of Pennsylvania Hospital where she graduated in 1953 as a Registered Nurse. She stayed on at Presbyterian University of Pennsylvania Hospital until 1971, when she retired. She was a faithful member of Church of the Saviour, Wayne.

She was a member of the Women's Auxiliary at Presbyterian University of Pennsylvania Hospital and she was a lifetime participant in the Harvard Medical School Nurses' Health Study. In retirement, she was very active with her church; she ran the Mission House for over 15 years, helped with the Welcome Table, was part of the Premarital Counseling Team, and was an active Elder's wife. She was involved with her husband as a bible teacher and speaker with Campus Crusade for Christ (Cru), Executive Ministry. Eleanor also was on the Architectural Review Committee at Hermitage in Bryn Mawr for over 20 years. For over six years, she enjoyed showing her champion Shetland Sheepdog "Topper" (who one year was the #1 Sheltie in the nation).

Eleanor is survived by her two children, David R. Darwin and Susan M. (Darwin) Corl and her husband Todd A. Corl, all of Springfield; a stepdaughter, Susan Stevens Plaza and her husband, Mario Plaza of Bellvue, CO; 13 grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Also surviving are Eleanor's two sisters, Louise (Van Dyke) Bartolett and her husband, Rev. Charles Bartolett of Doylestown and Elizabeth (Van Dyke) Olney and her husband, Floyd Olney of  Westernville, NY.

In addition to her parents and her husband, Eleanor is predeceased by her oldest son, Richard A. Darwin.

A Memorial Service for Eleanor will be celebrated at 4pm on Sunday, October 2, 2022 at New Hope Christian Church, 551 Paxon Hollow Rd, Broomall, PA 19008 with her pastor, Rev. Thomas Walsh officiating. Burial will be private in Whitemarsh Memorial Park, Ambler.
