Dorothy Carter Obituary

Dorothy J. Carter (nee Gabriel), 101, of Springfield, PA, passed away peacefully at her home on Friday, February 9, 2024. Dorothy was the wife of the late Julian B. Carter and daughter of the late Edward W. and Mary M. (nee Gunzer) Gabriel. Survivors include her loving children Richard L. and William J. Carter; their wives Susan G. Carter and Heather Dittbrenner; Dorothy’s grandchildren, Robin G. and Emma K. Carter; and her great-grandchild, Kylie L. Carter.

Though a homemaker for most of her life, Dorothy had considerable early talent as an executive secretary at the School District of Upper Darby and the Insurance Company of North America after her graduation from Upper Darby High School in 1940. During this period, Dorothy was also an avid equestrian who rode her own horse regularly through Philadelphia’s Fairmount Park. Her 1945 marriage to Julian (Jim) added sailing to her activities, which the couple pursued together for another 40 years.

Dorothy said the highlight of her life was raising her two boys, Richard (1953) and William (1957). She ended her outside career to devote herself to their well-being and happiness, ensuring that both had loving, safe and happy childhoods. The 1957 move to her beloved single home in Springfield, which she would occupy until her death, was another part of Dorothy’s life that gave her daily pleasure. When her boys left that home, Dorothy spent time on trips with Jim, sailing, working as a volunteer at Delaware County Memorial Hospital and collecting antique clocks.

Dorothy’s later years were spent without Jim, who passed from cancer in 1994, but with frequent visits from her sons and their families. Her interest in animals, children, football, as well as chocolate, television and the news of the day kept her vibrant, informed and in-touch, despite her eventual difficulties with sight, hearing and physical mobility. Her passing occurred quietly on her favorite living-room couch, with Richard and William at her side.

A service to celebrate Dorothy’s life will take place at Grace Lutheran Church, Broomall, PA, at a time to be determined.

Friends and family have shared their relationship to show their support.
