Colleen Rose Spaventa (née Callahan), age 59, passed away peacefully at home on April 13, 2025, surrounded by her loving family and friends.
Born on October 27, 1965, as the second of six children to Jack and Sabina Callahan, Colleen dedicated her life to caring for others. After earning her nursing degree from Hahnemann University in 1985 (and later her Bachelor’s from American University), she embarked on a distinguished career as a labor and delivery nurse at Fitzgerald Mercy and Delaware County hospitals. Throughout her professional journey, Colleen helped bring thousands of babies into the world, providing compassionate care and comfort to countless mothers during one of life's most transformative moments. Her career held special meaning as she had the privilege of helping deliver many babies of her friends and family members, creating profound bonds that transcended her professional role.
Colleen's nursing expertise extended far beyond hospital walls. Like her mother before her, she generously shared her medical knowledge with friends and family, helping them understand lab reports, answering questions about pregnancy and childbirth, and providing guidance through medical challenges. Perhaps most poignantly, she helped her loved ones, including both of her parents and her father-in-law Daniel, pass from this life with comfort, dignity, and grace.
Those who knew Colleen will remember her as a passionate advocate who would fight fiercely for her children while maintaining a sweet and thoughtful demeanor. She balanced caring deeply for others with nurturing her own well-being—a model of how to love both oneself and others fully. Though warm and compassionate, Colleen never hesitated to offer candid advice when it was needed. Her wisdom and honest feedback helped many navigate life's most difficult decisions and challenges.
Colleen is survived by her devoted husband of 37 years, Joseph; her sons Joseph, Matthew (Kelsey), and Nicholas; and her siblings Mary Rita, John, Patricia, Michael, and Edward. She was preceded in death by her parents Jack and Sabina, and her father-in-law Daniel.
As we mourn her passing, we take comfort in knowing that Colleen has rejoined her parents, father-in-law, and other deceased friends and family in eternal life. She was truly a saint on earth who gave selflessly to everyone in her life, and her legacy of love, compassion, and service will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know her.
Memorial services will be held at St. Dorothy's Church, 4910 Township Line Road, Drexel Hill, PA 19026, on Monday, April 21, 2025. Viewing will be from 8:30 AM to 9:45 AM followed immediately by the Funeral Mass at 10:00 AM.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Colleen’s memory to the American Cancer Society.
