Claire Schofield Hammonds
On January 20, 2023, 91-year-old Claire Schofield Hammonds fell peacefully into her final sleep. An only child, Claire was the daughter of the late Marion (Benson) and Roger S. Schofield. Mrs. Hammonds is predeceased by her parents, Roger & Marion Schofield and her husband, Kenneth A. Hammonds.
A degree in Psychology was received in 1953 from Mount Holyoke College followed by post-graduate work at the University of Pennsylvania. For 38 years, Claire taught at Drexel University in the Psychology Department as Professor of Education and Director of the Reading Clinic.
For three years after early retirement, Mrs. Hammonds enjoyed helping folks find new homes as a Realtor with Roach Bros.
After being a long-time resident of Drexel Hill, Claire moved to Dunwoody Village, Newtown Square after her marriage to the Rev. Dr. Kenneth A. Hammonds in 2004. Traveling, concerts, fellowship with family and friends filled their years together until Dr. Hammonds’ passing in 2009.
Claire was the past president of the Mount Holyoke Club of Philadelphia (participating with the Mt. Holyoke alumni - Phila. Chapter book club). She filled her days with visiting friends around the US, heading the Dining Committee in Dunwoody Village, biking, music and simply relishing in the simple pleasure of her own sunny patio.
Claire’s faith was pinnacle in her life. She was a proud member of both the Riverview and Ardmore Presbyterian Churches’ congregation serving terms for each as Elder and Deacon over the years. During the summer, you would find Claire vacationing in Ocean City and attending the Ocean City Tabernacle Church for her spiritual nourishment.
A Memorial Service for Mrs. Claire Hammonds will be private. She will be laid to rest in West Laurel Hill Cemetery.
