With deep sadness, we announce the passing of Carmen J. Salerno Jr. ("Dagger Bill"), who peacefully left us on March 29, 2025, at the age of 91. Carmen was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, friend, and brother whose love, warmth, and generosity touched the lives of many. His presence will be deeply missed, but his legacy will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
Carmen was born on August 11, 1933, in South Philadelphia, PA, to Carmen and Amilia Salerno (née Cerruti). He was one of eight children and grew up in a close-knit family where love and hard work were core values. A proud resident of South Philadelphia for most of his life, he later settled in Springfield, PA.
He married his wife, Esther Salerno (née Amato), also from South Philadelphia. Together they built a beautiful life and family over 65 years of love, companionship, and devotion—a union filled with laughter and mutual respect.
Carmen’s greatest joy was his son, Carmen Salerno III, originally from South Philadelphia and now residing in Springfield with his wife Janet Salerno (née Lynch). Carmen Jr. was a proud grandfather to Frank Testa (Connie) and Samantha Kates (Alex) and a great-grandfather to Addison and Bella, who brought him immense joy. He is also survived by nephews John Salerno Jr., William Robinson, and Andrew Verderame.
Known for his strength of character, unique sense of humor, and unwavering dedication to family, Carmen was deeply respected in both his personal life and professional endeavors. His kindness and hard work left an indelible mark on everyone he encountered.
A celebration of Carmen’s life will be held on April 4, 2025, at Saint Francis of Assisi Church (136 Saxer Ave., Springfield, PA 19064). Family and friends are invited to gather for visitation at 10:30 AM, followed by a service at 11:30 AM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice in Carmen’s memory.
Carmen’s passing leaves a profound void in our lives. However, his love, wisdom, and spirit will continue to guide us. His favorite saying “Make every day a masterpiece” will forever inspire those who knew him. Raise a glass of wine or beer in his honor; he would have loved that.
May he rest in peace.
