COL Joseph Nicholas Obituary

Joseph J. Nicholas “Jay”, of Wayne, Pennsylvania, 87 years old died after a short illness surrounded by family on February 3, 2024 in Exton, PA. Jay was born in Philadelphia, PA in 1936, grew up in Cheltenham and attended Bordentown Military Institute High School. Jay graduated from Pennsylvania Military College in 1958 where he was a member of Theta Chi fraternity and was appointed the Historian.  That appointment led him to chronical the Nicholas legacy through scrapbooking, as he compiled over two hundred books of pictures/drawings of his family, military assignments, badminton tournaments, and all the travels with his wife of 45 years, Connie. Jay served in the United States Army for nearly thirty years, assigned to various military bases in the US and abroad. He also completed two tours in Vietnam. In retirement Jay and Connie enjoyed traveling to such places as Australia, Greece, Iceland, England and Scotland. They also traveled the eastern seaboard, to include Migis Lodge on Sebego Lake in Maine, which held many memories for Jay and his family. Jay learned to play Badminton while serving in Vietnam and became an advocate for the sport, as well as a skilled player. He started many clubs, coached and was a long-time member of the Philadelphia Badminton Association. Badminton was his passion! Jays care of Connie during her long battle with ovarian cancer was an example of his loving dedication to her. Sadly, Connie died in May of 2004. Jay spent much of his time after Connie’s passing not only playing badminton but also introducing his grandchildren to the sport, as well as camping, and exhilarating games of Canasta. Jay is survived by his sister Jean Alsentzer (John) of Philadelphia, PA and brother Charles Nicholas (Nancy) of Ocala, FL. His three devoted children, Caroline Flint (Ed) of Chesapeake, VA, Suzanne Dobson (Joe) of Coatesville, PA and Joseph Jarrett Nicholas, Jr. (Joanne) of Marple, PA. His six grandchildren, Emily Flint, A.J. Flint, Katherine Dobson (Eric Jenkins), Nicholas Dobson, Leanne Nicholas and Liam Nicholas. A memorial service will be held on March 9, 2024 at 10:30 am at Washington Memorial Chapel in Valley Forge, PA.
