Bernadette “Bernie” Marie (nee McHugh) Whalen, 74 of Broomall, passed away in her home with her devoted husband by her side. She was the loving wife of retired Philadelphia Police Detective, Robert “Bob” F. Whalen. The couple married on St. Patrick’s Day at St. Dorothy’s Church, in 2007.
Bernie was born on August 5, 1948, a daughter of the late John and Alice (nee Scally) McHugh. Bernie was a West Catholic Girls High School graduate who went on to receive her Associate of Science degree and became a Registered Nurse. Throughout her more than 35-year career as a nurse, Bernie worked at several hospitals including the old Philadelphia General Hospital, Graduate Hospital, Misericordia Hospital (now known as Mercy Hospital) and Roxborough Memorial Hospital. Due to health issues, she retired from nursing in 2010.
Bernie enjoyed traveling as well as reading, cooking, and watching QVC.
In addition to her husband Bob, Bernie is survived by her four sisters, Geraldine (nee McHugh) Hamilton, Alice Theresa (nee McHugh) Carlin, Sarah “Sally” (nee McHugh) North and her husband Greg, and Maureen McHugh; 10 in-laws, Lyndanne (nee Whalen) Blahovec and her husband Donald, Thomas Whalen, Theresa (nee Whalen) Holmes, David Whalen and his wife Judy, Janice (nee Whalen) Wessner and her husband Todd, Patricia (nee Whalen) Mitchell and her husband Joe, Rosemarie Whalen and her wife Deb, Eileen (nee Whalen) Ordonez, Judy (nee Whalen) Geist and her husband Jim and May (nee Whalen) Nilan and her husband Joe; two sisters-in-law, Diane Whalen and Linda Whalen and many nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family.
In addition to her parents, John and Alice, Bernie is predeceased by Bob’s parents, Albert and Mary Bernice (nee Monaghan) Whalen; brother-in law Albert Whalen, Jr., brother-in-law Sonny Holmes and a nephew, Todd Wessner, Jr.
A Funeral Mass will be said at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 13, 2023, at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 220 Lawrence Road, Broomall, PA 19008. Family and Friends are invited to a viewing on Friday, May 12, 2023, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Logan-Videon Funeral Home, 2001 Sproul Road, Broomall, PA 19008. Bernie will be laid to rest in SS Peter & Paul Cemetery, Springfield.
