Arthur P. Miller Jr., 101, of Audubon, PA, passed away peacefully on November 16, 2025 surrounded by his loving family. He was born on April 6, 1924 in Washington, D.C. and graduated from Teaneck, NJ High School in 1941, Mount Hermon School, Massachusetts in 1942, and Penn State University in 1947, earning a master’s degree from Columbia University in 1948. Called to wartime duty in the Navy, he served as a radar officer on a troop transport in the Pacific and continued in the Naval Reserve for 25 years.
He began his career as a journalist with the Chester (PA) Times. After serving as news editor of the Navy’s newsmagazine All Hands in Washington, DC, he wrote for the International Press Service of the U.S. Information Agency before joining the National Geographic Society where he was assistant editor of the Geographic School Bulletin, planning content and layout for 240 weekly issues, and wrote chapters for five National Geographic books that sold 1.5 million copies. He was with the National Geographic Society for 15 years.
In 1974, Art became the public affairs officer for the Mid-Atlantic Region of the National Park Service as the Park Service helped spearhead celebration of the nation’s bicentennial. He wrote and published numerous freelance articles. Upon retirement, he and his wife Marge researched and co-authored seven books on natural and cultural history, traveling in their motor home across the country for 88,000 miles.
He served two terms on the board of directors of the National Press Club in Washington, DC as financial secretary. He belonged to the Society of Professional Journalists, National Association of Government Communicators, Philadelphia Public Relations Association, and Delaware County Press Club. He sang for 28 years with the Bryn Mawr Mainliners barbershop chorus, was a devoted member of Wayne United Methodist Church and served as a trustee of the Lower Providence Community Library. He served as a disaster official with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Together he and Marge served as instructors for 12 years with the Road Scholar program with whom they also traveled widely.
He was predeceased by his father Arthur P. Miller and his mother Bertha (Redifer) of Washington, DC and his sister Barbara Smachetti (Hank) of Simsbury, CT. He is survived by his beloved wife of 70 years Marge, and four daughters Sue Smith (Grady) of Marietta, Ohio; Kathi Thomas of Plymouth Meeting, Pa.; Jan Martin (Lance) of Marlton, N.J.; Nancy (Billy Bob) Brown of Arlington, Va.; grandchildren Bailey Smith Baker (Matt), Kyle Martin, Kelsey Martin, Danyela Brown and Adrian Brown; and great-granddaughter Kinsley Miller Devine.
Memorial Service
A Celebration of Life will be held Friday, December 12, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. at Wayne United Methodist Church, 210 S. Wayne Avenue, Wayne, Pa., and will be preceded by a visitation at the church from 10:00-11:00 a.m. A light reception will be provided.
