Alvina Barnard Obituary

Alvina E. Barnard (née Gupton), lovingly known as “Niney,” passed away on March 3, 2025, at her home in Springfield. Born and raised in Philadelphia, Alvina spent the first part of her life in the city she loved before moving to Springfield in 1991.

A proud graduate of West Catholic Girls' High School, Alvina later married her high school sweetheart, James R. Barnard, with whom she shared nearly 58 beautiful years of marriage. Together, they built a life centered around love, laughter, and family, raising three children: James R. Barnard Jr. (Marie Barnard), Patricia E. Borlie (David Borlie), and Dawn M. Barnard.

Alvina was a devoted grandmother to eight grandchildren: Emily Barnard, Holly Barnard, Autumn Barnard, Katie Borlie, Jamie Borlie, Sara Borlie, Wyatt Borlie, and Luke Borlie. She was predeceased by her mother, Elizabeth Morrell, and her beloved sister, Marie Hayes. She shared an extraordinary, lifelong friendship of more than 70 years with her best friend, Nancy Schwenger, and remained especially close to her wonderful cousins, who brought her great joy throughout her life.

In recent years, Alvina faced numerous health challenges and had been in and out of hospitals with various illnesses since late 2020. Throughout her struggles, she received unwavering love and care from her daughter, Dawn, an ICU nurse whose compassion and expertise ensured Alvina's comfort.

During her career, Alvina worked as a medical biller at Mercy Prospect Medical Center, where she was known for her diligence and kindness. In retirement, she embraced her greatest joy—spending time with family. She treasured vacations to Cape Charles Beach, Virginia, where she could relax by the bay, as well as trips to the mountains of north central Pennsylvania, where she marveled at the beautiful countryside and wildlife.

Alvina was the heart of her family, always caring for those in need. Her nurturing spirit extended to many relatives over the years, and her kindness knew no bounds.

Above all, Alvina was the most loving wife, mother, and grandmother—truly the best any child could ever hope to have. Her absence leaves an immeasurable void, and she will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

celebration of Alvina’s life will be held on Friday, March 7, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Morton, with a viewing from 12:30 to 1:30, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will take place at Saints Peter and Paul Cemetery in Springfield.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in her memory to the American Heart Association.
