Charles Zimmerman Obituary

Charles George Zimmerman, 84, of Downingtown, PA passed away on January 1, 2020.  Charles was born in 1935 in Philadelphia, PA and was the son of the late Charles and Anna (McLaughlin) Zimmerman.  He was a graduate of Saint Joseph’s University and worked in industrial pipes, valves, and fittings sales.

Charles served in the U.S. Naval reserves on a destroyer escort and was honorably discharged in 1961.  He loved everything about the Navy and enjoyed watching the annual Army/Navy football game, especially the parade of cadets and midshipmen prior to the game.  Although Charles was very quiet, he enjoyed history and politics and was not afraid to let anyone know his thoughts and opinions on a wide range of topics.  He was very faithful and prayed daily, and enjoyed spending time with his family.

Charles was the loving husband for 61 years of Beatrice(Volkert) Zimmerman; beloved father of Paul (Lisa) and John (Lisa); devoted grandfather of Nicole Ernst (Stephen), Paul Jr., Andrew, Kyle and Amanda; adoring great-grandfather of Austin and Aaron.

Relatives and friends are invited to his Visitation from 9:30-11:00 AM on Monday, January 6, 2020 at SS Philip & James Church, 107 N. Ship Rd (corner of Ship Rd & Rte 30), Exton, PA 19341, followed by his Funeral Mass at 11:00 AM. Interment at SS Peter & Paul Cemetery in Springfield, PA.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Penn Medicine Hospice at Chester County, 400 East Marshall Street, West Chester, PA  19380.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

The Zimmerman family would like to thank everyone for their help, support, thoughts, and prayers during this difficult time.  Words cannot express how much it meant to know there was such a strong and reliable network of care that came to our aid in sometimes a moment’s notice from family, friends, and hospice care workers.  Despite the struggles of the past couple of weeks, we will always remember how Charles enjoyed Christmas Day and had his last meal – a delicious steak dinner – before his dementia took control of him.  We are comforted by the fact that he is in a better place and is no longer suffering.

Friends and family have shared their relationship to show their support.
How do you know Charles G. Zimmerman?
We are sorry for your loss.
